It’s raining here in NYC so Day 3 of my 10 day writing journey gives some resources and an inspiring documentary from Nike x National Geographic about their 2016–2017 attempt to break a 2-hour marathon.

8 days before Chicago. Check out part 1 and part 2.

Lelisa Desisa, Zersenay Tadese, and Eliud Kipchoge for Nike’s Breaking2 project

How Strength Training Makes You Faster: This is an area I am going to delve much deeper into post-marathon for several reasons. For starters, we don’t need to be confined to a single mode of exercise or activity. I run, but I also love strength training, taking circuit classes, doing mobility and yoga work, and playing sports. Strength training can improve your running and get your body more resilient to withstand the repetitive impact of the sport. My goal is to have several free open access programs out by Spring 2023. Message me and let me know what would be most helpful!

Nike Breaking2 Project Documentary: I was early on in my professional training career and was still avoiding running in 2016–2017 but Breaking2 deeply inspired me to learn more about the sport and to become passionate about training runners. Below is a short 55 minute documentary about the science and stories of these top athletes Eliud Kipchoge, Lelisa Desisa, and Zersenay Tadese.

How to Pace Yourself: Last week in my strength training class for runners, I got asked by a first time marathoner how he can determine his race pace and how to best pace himself during the 26.2 miles. Below are two resources that helped me tremendously last year. Long story short, treat the race like a progression run. Start a bit slower (10–20 seconds slower than goal race pace if you know it) and build pace gradually as you get deeper into the race. Your final miles should be your fastest (maybe 5–15s below race pace). You get stronger the longer you run this way, trust me!

^ you’ll find great insights from the one and only Coach Jes Woods.

Have a great weekend!
